Former award winning Assistant Professor with focus on complex business litigation
Smith, Gildea & Schmidt, LLC (SGS), a regional law firm based in Towson, is pleased to announce Melissa English, an experienced litigator and award winning professor, has joined the firm.English joins SGS after spending the past three years as an Assistant Professor of Business Law in the College of Business at Western Carolina University. She developed and taught courses in business litigation, real and intellectual property, business ethics and corporate responsibility, and constitutional law. In 2014, English earned the Bloomberg Businessweek Faculty Teaching Award.”Melissa compliments and adds to the firm’s growing complex civil litigation team,” said David Gildea, Founder and Managing Partner of SGS. “Her trial experience in State and Federal Court and background in both practicing and teaching business litigation will be a great asset to the firm and our clients.”English has also practiced law at Van Winkle Law Firm in Asheville, NC and Haralson Miller Pitt Feldman & McAnally in Tucson, AZ. She has extensive complex civil litigation experience in state and federal courts, in addition to appellate experience in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and Arizona and North Carolina state appellate courts.English earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arizona where she was a member of Moot Court and the Arizona International Law Journal. Her awards include the William T. Birmingham Trial Advocacy Award and the F. Britton Burns Moot Court Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy. She received a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Georgia and Rhodes College, respectively.English is licensed to practice law in Maryland and North Carolina.
