Smith, Gildea & Schmidt, LLC, a regional law firm with offices in Towson and Baltimore, is pleased to announce that Stephen J. Nolan, Of Counsel, has been selected to Super Lawyers magazine for the General Litigation field of law for 2019. Nolan, who has had an established litigation practice in Towson for more than 40 years, had previously been named to the Super Lawyers list from 2007-2018.
Super Lawyers magazine rates the service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The patented selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. The objective is to create a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for attorneys and consumers searching for legal counsel across the country.
After earning a bachelor’s degree with honors from Villanova University and a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law, Nolan began his legal career in 1977 as an attorney at Nolan, Plumhoff, and Williams, which was founded by his father James D. Nolan. In 2003, he went out on his own and developed a successful litigation practice. Nolan merged his firm into SGS in 2018.
Throughout his career, Nolan has been involved in a wide variety of complex litigation, class actions and other cases. He served as Maryland counsel for the NFL Players Association, special counsel for CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield in a pharmaceutical class action, and lead counsel for Anne Arundel and Baltimore County Public Schools and Governments in the asbestos property damage litigation. Following a trial in Montgomery County and the defendant’s appeal, he collected over $9.8 million from one asbestos manufacturer for the family of a young wife and mother, who died from mesothelioma.
Nolan, a past president of the Baltimore County Bar Association, has received numerous awards for his work, including the Maryland Bar Foundation’s Award for Legal Excellence for the Advancement of Public Service Responsibility; its Award for Legal Excellence for the Advancement of Rights of the Disadvantaged; the Leadership in Law Award from The Daily Record, as well as other pro bono awards.
Nolan is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Community College of Baltimore County, where he leads a Board of 15 trustees; a Board member of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, Inc.; a member of the American Bar Association, Maryland State Bar Association, Baltimore County Bar Association and the Maryland Association for Justice.
